PUSHapp vs Hevy: Counter or Logger for Push-Ups?

PUSHapp counts push-ups automatically with your camera; Hevy logs full workouts you enter yourself. Which fits your training — or should you use both?

Side-by-side comparison of push-up tracking apps and counting methods

What each app actually does

PUSHapp points your phone camera at you and counts push-ups in real time using on-device pose detection. It checks that each rep reaches enough depth, counts out loud, tracks streaks and records, and can save a video of the set with the count burned in. It's free to start, works in the browser, on iPhone, and on Android.

Hevy is a strength-training logger. You build routines, then during (or after) a workout you enter what you did: exercise, sets, reps, weight. It has a polished interface, great history and progression charts, templates, and a social feed. It has a strong free tier.

The key difference: Hevy records what you tell it. PUSHapp records what you did.

Where PUSHapp wins

  • Automatic counting. Mid-set, out of breath, you don't have to count — the camera does.
  • Honest reps. Depth validation means half-reps don't register. If the app says 23, you did 23 real push-ups.
  • Proof. The set video with a live counter is shareable evidence for challenges and PRs.
  • Zero-friction start. No account needed to try it; open the counter and go.

Where Hevy wins

  • Full-workout logging. Bench press, rows, squats — PUSHapp only does push-ups; Hevy covers your whole session.
  • Long-term history. Years of training data, progression charts, volume tracking.
  • Programming. Routines, templates, supersets, rest timers.

The verdict

  • Your goal is "count my push-ups for me and keep me consistent"PUSHapp.
  • Your goal is "track my whole training life in one place"Hevy.
  • You're serious about both push-ups and gym training → use both: count the set in PUSHapp, log the number in Hevy.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hevy count push-ups automatically?

No. Hevy is a workout logger — you enter sets, reps, and weight yourself. It's excellent for history and programming, but it doesn't watch or count your push-ups. PUSHapp counts them automatically with your camera.

Can I use PUSHapp and Hevy together?

Yes, and it's a good combination: let PUSHapp count your push-up set hands-free (with depth validation), then log the final number in Hevy alongside your other exercises.

Which is better for a push-up challenge?

PUSHapp — it counts in real time, records a video with the rep count burned in, and has streaks and leaderboards. A logger can store the result, but it can't verify it.
