Can't feel your chest during bench press? Try these 3 exercises
A BOXROX article notes lack of chest feeling in bench press and offers three drills to boost chest activation and improve push-ups.
A BOXROX piece points out that some lifters don't feel their chest during bench presses and it lays out three exercises to revive chest activation. It treats chest engagement as a limiter to pressing power and to how well you transfer to bodyweight moves. Source: BOXROX.
Why it matters for push-ups
During push-ups the chest works alongside the triceps and front delts. If the chest stays disengaged, you may end up using more shoulder effort or relying on momentum. Better activation helps you control the descent and press through a fuller range of motion, improving reps and cutting shoulder strain. The bench press can guide push-up progressions when you focus on scapular stability and a deliberate pause at the bottom.
Pushapp take
For PUSHapp users, wire chest activation into your warm-up and first sets. Aim for a clear chest squeeze before your hands hit floor or bar. Keep tight shoulders and a stable spine while you teach the chest what a proper press feels like.
Try this
- Chest activation prep: Do a 30 second activation hold before your first push-up set, squeeze the chest, pinch the shoulder blades together, and breathe calmly. Then perform incline push-ups with a full chest squeeze at the top and a 1 to 2 second pause at the bottom to feel the chest work.
- Tempo and resistance: Add tempo push-ups with a 3 second descent, 1 second pause, and a fast ascent to reinforce control. If you have a band handy, place a light resistance band across your chest and press against it during the activation, then remove it for the set.
